Academic Appointment Processing Times

  • Academic appointments must be approved by the Vice Chancellor for Research before the Scholar can begin working.
  • The appointment request material should be provided to RES Human Resources eight weeks prior to the proposed start date to allow ample time for approval.
  • International Scholars requiring visas should contact RES HR as early as possible. Visa processing requires a minimum of three months and up to six months, depending on the visa type.

Information needed from PI:

  • Complete appropriate authorization form for either Specialist or Professional Researcher (signed copy indicating dates, rate of pay, fund source, and research description).
  • Provide proposed salary – based on skill, experience, and professional degree(s) – Please refer to the following salary scales:

Professional Researchers:

Hiring Process

  • Complete Exceptional Permission to Recruit (EPTR) - Temporary appointments not to exceed 50% for more than 1 year w/identified candidate.
  • Alternatively, can complete Permission to Recruit form – Open positions expected to exceed 50% for more than 1 year.

  • Provide detailed job description and list of minimum qualifications for the job on the form.
  • Anything above Step 1 must be explained in the “Justification for Exception” box provided on the form. Salaries should be discussed with Human Resources before they are entered on the form.
  • Attach candidate’s most recent c.v. and/or UC Biography Form, along with publications list (if applicable).
  • If a visa is required, please contact Newsha Firoozye for more information on application process and required supporting document.
  • Once the appointment has been approved, the candidate will be contacted to set up an appointment to fill out hire documents. An offer letter will be provided prior to the start date of appointment.
