In mid-July, Vice Chancellor for Research Graham Fleming announced that the dire budget circumstances facing the campus necessitate consolidating and restructuring Berkeley's research units as quickly as possible. A complex process was launched to determine how this consolidation will take shape, with a firm commitment from VCR Fleming to broad consultation, ongoing collaboration, transparency, and timely communication. For some of the affected research units, administrative services will no longer be provided within each unit but will instead be provided by RES as of December 1. Budget cuts of the scope we are facing are impossible to implement without a reduction in personnel. As units work through their budget reduction process, a determined number of job reassignments are occurring. Employees directly affected by the reorganization were reassigned and offered the opportunity to apply for a number of RES administrative positions by September 25.
